Shield of the Star Arrow

At the dawn of the new century, China’s space program was just getting started and urgently needed high-precision technology for rocket launches, satellite defense, and temperature control and radiation protection aboard space stations. At this time, Xingjian, a company developing specialized glass for the space industry, braved headwinds and pressed forward, bearing witness to China’s space program overcoming every obstacle and flourishing. This book focuses on Xingjian’s independent development of flexible radiation-resistant glass cover plates for space applications, OSR second-surface mirrors, and glass for space station window lighting systems. It follows the company as it fulfills an extra-large order for Shenzhou 5, uncovers a spy plot, takes part in an emergency satellite launch, and supplies equipment for the space station, helping China’s space program venture into deep space and shine among the stars. It tells the story of two generations of Xingjian employees and their patriotic dedication, while capturing the warmth of everyday life and all that makes life worthwhile.
