Xiaogezao

Set in a small village in the mountains of Guizhou, the story follows the coming-of-age of the protagonist, “Xiao Gezhao,” and explores traditional customs, family relationships, personal destiny, and other themes. Through its depictions of everyday rural life, the novel reveals the complex ties between people, nature, and society. The opening description of the mountain hollow, for example, not only creates a distinctive sense of place but also foreshadows the characters’ fates.
