Huangchao Uprising (875-884) The largest peasant uprising in the late Tang Dynasty, led by private salt dealer Huang Chao, shook the foundation of Tang rule and accelerated its demise. Background Politically, the eunuchs were monopolizing power, vassal towns were segregated, and the imperial rule was weak; economically, land annexation was serious, taxes were heavy, and years of famines were adding to the famine, making the people miserable; the salt policy was harsh, and the government monopolized the salt industry and suppressed private salt traders, prompting Huang Chao and others to resist. Passed In 875, Huang Chao responded to Wang Xianzhi and gathered thousands of people to raise troops in Caozhou, Shandong. The rebel army fought on the move and fought in many provinces, once occupying Guangzhou. In 880, he conquered Luoyang and occupied Chang'an, establishing the "Da Qi" regime. In 883, Huang Chao withdrew from Chang'an. In 884, Huang Chao was defeated and committed suicide in the Langhu Valley of Mount Tai. Features It is highly mobile, avoids the real and attacks the weak but has no solid base; it suppresses bureaucratic landlords harshly and also kills indiscriminately (such as the massacre of foreign businessmen in Guangzhou); it uses the slogan "Heaven makes up for the balance" to reflect the people's demands for equality. Influence The Tang Dynasty existed in name only, and vassal towns were established. The war caused a sharp decline in population, and the economies of Jianghuai and the Central Plains were severely damaged. This paved the way for Zhu Wen to usurp the Tang Dynasty (907) and the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. Evaluation It is a typical example of traditional peasant war, which exposed the social contradictions in the late Tang Dynasty, due to the lack of a clear program and the failure of the organization; the deeds are widely circulated among the people (such as "Huang Chao killed eight million people"), and many historical records are exaggerated.
