A materialistic world: The story is set in a near future that strictly follows a materialistic worldview. All phenomena are understood through the lens of physics, chemistry and biology; there is no supernatural power, magic or divine intervention. In a world without a soul or an afterlife, an individual's physical form makes up all of his or her existence. Thus, a forced physical transformation is more than just a physical change, it represents a fundamental, irreversible self-destruction, raising the stakes of the story from a simple "monster" narrative to a philosophical one about the complete annihilation of identity.
