Whirlpool Memory

Since Tibet's reform and opening up, under the Party's education policy, many children of herdsmen in northern Tibet have had the opportunity to step out of the grasslands and into the wider world, experience the charm and elegance of different cultures, and write new stories of the times among different cultures. This novel takes this as the background of the times and narrates it with two alternating narrative clues. In the even-numbered chapters, the male protagonist is Tsering Gyatso, the editor of a translation agency in Beijing, and his originally happy and loving relationship with his wife Tenzin Lhamo, a graduate student in the music department, broke down. His wife Lhamo died shortly after their divorce. After his death, he decided to start a new life, took leave from the translation agency and returned to his home in the northern Tibetan pastoral area where he had not returned for many years. However, on the way, the past of him and his wife came to mind, and he discovered that there was a huge crisis hidden behind their seemingly perfect relationship. He believed that these were the precursors of his wife's death. In the odd chapters of the novel, Linzi, a common friend of Jiacuo and Lamu after their marriage, and Danyang, the couple's school friend, are Han and Tibetan. The two girls followed Jiacuo's footsteps and also went deep into the pastoral area of northern Tibet. They met because of Lamu's death, and followed Jiacuo's footsteps for their own reasons. The novel uses magical realism to depict the theme of memory and choices about destiny, telling the story of how to deal with the unforgettable past and find new hope to live.
