Football: The Elegance of a Classic Defensive Midfielder Begins with Risking It All

“Elegance” was once the most fashionable compliment in the world of soccer, like blue-and-white porcelain after a spring rain…

It gave off an air of “classical” artistry.

It was Zidane’s composure as he spun through a Marseille turn, the artistry of Riquelme’s Cruyff turn, Berbatov’s languid finish…

Those were the moments that made fans hold their breath…

The ball seemed alive at their feet, every touch like a brushstroke on canvas, creating a beauty that never hurried.

Then Claude Makelele burst onto the scene, and elegance gradually became synonymous with “sluggishness,” quietly swept into the dustbin of history.

In 2014, another name in the up-and-down career of James Rodriguez further proved that elegance was dead!

From then on, elegance became something head coaches scorned.

In 2015…

A Chinese teenager whom the experts had written off as “hopeless” entered Fiorentina’s locker room, carrying nothing but his determination.

On the pitch, he left behind a cry:

Elegance will never go out of style!!!

This is the story of a boy who lived like his life depended on it, undaunted by rumors, contempt, or hardship, and who believed, “If people isolate you, it means you’re strong. If they slander you, it means you’re exceptional.”

Years later, someone asked him,

“Why did James Rodriguez fail while you succeeded?”

He replied, “Because I played like my life depended on it!”

“Why is the Chinese men’s national team despised, while you’re loved?”

He replied, “Because I played like my life depended on it!”
