When Chang'an Never Sleeps

[The ensemble format of Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty meets the storytelling style of The Longest Day in Chang'an]

Chang'an, Tang Dynasty, on a night under curfew.

A Dali Temple deputy minister is out on official business when a Jinwu Guard arrow fells him. He dies with blood pouring from all seven orifices. The incident sparks a dispute between Dali Temple and the Jinwu Guards, but neither side reaches a conclusion.

At this point, Zhang Chujin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Justice, is forced to take over the case. Seven feet tall and scholarly in appearance, he is widely known throughout the court and the country as a “fault-finder,” having made many enemies by repeatedly challenging Dali Temple’s case files. The emperor gives him five days to solve the case or resign.

Yet to Zhang Chujin, whether he keeps his post is a secondary concern. Five years earlier, his elder brother Zhang Renli was found hanged. Dali Temple ruled it a suicide, but the drawing of a spearhead found on his person has remained an inescapable mystery in Zhang Chujin’s mind.

The moment he steps into Pingkang Ward through the rain, he is already caught in the heart of a great storm.

Four mysterious cases bring him back together with his old friend Ouyang Feng and introduce him to Wen Lianye, a woman of the martial world. Together, they uncover the scars hidden beneath the Tang Dynasty’s age of prosperity and search for the answers each of them needs.
