Spirit Terrace Chronicles: The Rebellion of Wu Geng and the Duke of Zhou's Eastern Campaign

Set in the early years of the Western Zhou dynasty, this novel tells of the Rebellion of Wu Geng and the Duke of Zhou's eastern campaign, weaving history together with myth.

On the spirit terrace, a grand sacrificial offering was laid out.

The Duke of Zhou ascended the steps, holding the sacrificial address in both hands, and wept as he spoke:

“Marshal of the eastern campaign, Grand Preceptor, Duke Dan of Zhou, respectfully offers this sacrifice to the soldiers who fell suppressing the rebellion:

“Loyal spirits and valiant bones endure for all time!

I remember King Wu, who received Heaven's mandate, overthrew the tyrannical Shang, and brought peace to the four seas, allowing the people to live in comfort.

King Wu died too soon, and a young ruler took the throne. The Yin marquis Wu Geng, taking advantage of the sovereign's youth, conspired with the Three Supervisors and joined forces with the eastern tribes to launch a rebellion, bringing devastation upon the common people and leaving them unable to live in peace.

Heaven's virtue is manifest. Zhou has received the Mandate, to pacify the four quarters and care for the people.

With hearts as pure as children, you left the western lands and followed me east, riding into battle across the fields.

You slew Lu Fu, deposed the Three Supervisors, subdued the Xu tribes, and defeated Shang Yan.

You achieved deeds without equal and left a name for the ages.

Valiant warriors, your fame resounded in every direction.

Alas, fallen heroes, your souls have returned to the Nine Springs.

Now we return victorious to court, and the Son of Heaven rewards us handsomely. Yet, remembering your departed spirits, I beat my breast and grieve bitterly.

The mountains and rivers wail; heaven and earth mourn with us.

We respectfully offer these seasonal sacrifices to comfort your heroic spirits.

May you graciously partake!”
