Set in the early years of the Western Zhou, this novel tells the story of the Rebellion of Wu Geng and the Duke of Zhou's eastern campaign, blending history with mythology.
On the spirit terrace, a grand sacrificial offering was laid out.
The Duke of Zhou ascended the steps, holding the sacrificial address in both hands, and wept as he read:
“Duke Dan of Zhou, Grand Marshal of the Eastern Campaign and Grand Preceptor, respectfully offers this sacrifice to the soldiers who fell suppressing the rebellion:
“Loyal souls and heroic bones endure for all time!
“Remember King Wu, who received the Mandate of Heaven, destroyed the tyrannical Shang, and brought peace to the four seas, letting the people live in comfort.
“King Wu died young, and a child succeeded him. The Marquis of Yin, Wu Geng, took advantage of the young ruler, allied with the Three Overseers, conspired with the eastern tribes, and raised an army in rebellion, plunging the common people into misery and leaving them unable to live in peace.
“By the virtue of August Heaven, the Zhou received the Mandate, to pacify the four quarters and care for the people.
“With hearts as pure as children’s, you left the western lands and followed me east, charging across the battlefield.
“You executed Lu Fu, deposed the Three Overseers, subdued the Xu Rong, and defeated Shang Yan.
“You achieved a feat without equal and left your names for all time.
“Brave warriors, your renown shook the four quarters.
“Alas, fallen heroes of our state, your souls return to the Yellow Springs.
“Today we return victorious to court, and the Son of Heaven rewards us greatly. Yet thinking of your departed souls, I beat my breast and grieve.
“The mountains and rivers lament; Heaven and Earth mourn with us.
“We respectfully offer the seasonal sacrifices to comfort your heroic spirits.
“May you accept this offering!”
