The Walled Village: The Burning Years of Passion

Also known as The Seasons of the Weilong House. In northeastern Guangdong lies a small mountain village, and in that village stands a Weilong House. In 1955, Lin Jihong moved with his family to Meihua Village and settled in the Weilong House. A series of stories unfolds from there. The house is home to all kinds of villagers: the old revolutionary village chief Zeng Xiangrong; Sister A Gui, a fiery widow struggling to raise her two sons who dares to do anything; the unmarried rogue Zeng Fanfan, who once served as a platoon leader in the county security corps; Zeng Zhiqiang, principal of Meihua Village Primary School, and his eleven-year-old only daughter, Zeng Cuifen, who is all he has; Zeng Cuiying, orphaned and living with “little person disease” (dwarfism), who loves and hates with equal passion; Zeng Xianglong, honest, kindhearted, and robust; Zeng Xiangfu, who traveled far and wide before Liberation, telling fortunes; Zeng Xianggui, a barefoot doctor whose medical skills were passed down through his family; and Zeng Xiangwen, a pedantic old scholar who earned the title of juren in the late Qing Dynasty, loves books like his own life, delights in lecturing people, and speaks in classical turns of phrase.
