Tales from Mount Mufu

At the foot of Mount Mufu, where the provinces of Jiangxi, Anhui, and Hubei meet, stands an ancient little village inhabited by only a handful of families. One is the Leng family, whose members have been rugged, forthright, kind, and brave for generations. Since the last century, they have struggled to change their fate, only to be battered time and again by changes in society and the times. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, only one boy remained in the family line: Leng Gou, a name chosen to bring him good luck. He unexpectedly learns about his family's origins and the twists and turns in his maternal grandfather's past. Together with Leng Huai, the family's longest-lived member, now a centenarian, he carefully pieces together the history of the entire Mufu township. What he never expected was that Dong Qingning, his childhood friend and the girl he grew up with, would turn out to be the granddaughter of his family's sworn enemy. The old tales passed down in the mountains of Mufu: how much is fact, and how much fiction? Generation after generation holds fast to a sound moral compass while navigating events that are both fantastical and all too real. A society in upheaval clashes with unchanging values, sparking brilliant moments. From this little town to the neighboring county seats, then to Nanchang, Shanghai, and Tokyo, Japan, times and places overlap, bringing change and constancy together. In the end, it is the ordinary nature of ordinary people that shines through, along with the Leng family's steadfast habit of doing good without worrying about what comes next.
