When he, at thirty, meets her, at ten, the clash between their diametrically opposed beliefs begins to unfold both inside and outside the courtroom. Is the law, as she says, the embodiment of justice and a shield protecting the weak? Or is it, as he says, something that has never protected the weak at all, merely setting a code of conduct that no one may defy, a supreme decree no one can violate, whether they are weak or strong? Perhaps the law has never existed for the sake of the weak. Yet people’s hearts are forever searching for a fairness that has never existed.
