My Female Editor Girlfriend

At 28, Ma Liwei is an underpaid office worker by day and a writer by night, documenting the struggles of city workers. For seven years, his submissions have been rejected time and again. Feng Yu, deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine Shazhou, remains committed to her literary ideals. Among piles of mediocre submissions, she discovers Ma Liwei’s “Dust of the City,” a story depicting the lives of people on society’s fringes through the eyes of a food delivery worker. Its prose, “as sharp as a blade in its realism,” immediately catches her attention. From awkward revision requests after their first meeting to late-night discussions over every word in a café, their souls quietly draw closer as they polish his writing. When rumors spread that Ma Liwei’s work benefited from unspoken workplace favoritism, he publicly produces “hard evidence,” including seven rounds of revised manuscripts, to clear his editor’s name. When Feng Yu argues with the marketing department to protect quality content, he silently supports her with a cup of hot milk tea. These two devotees of literature stand by each other amid editorial battles and the onslaught of online traffic, using realist prose to push back against a restless age. Their unspoken feelings, meanwhile, simmer in the details: from a coffee cup knocked over by accident to sharing egg-yolk pastries late at night. Their journey from workplace mentor and protégé to soulmates shows how idealists can protect their love of literature and their pure affection amid the tides of everyday life. Through professional settings such as editorial meetings and programs for nurturing new writers, the novel offers a vivid portrayal of contemporary literary life. It combines nail-biting workplace clashes with writers’ profound insights into reality, and tells a love story born of a meeting of minds through the written word and fulfilled in a union of souls.
