Jingmiao's Lamb Soup House

This realistic novel is complete. It begins with a light, delicate flavor, grows mellow as it goes down, and leaves a lingering aftertaste. I suggest reading the author’s afterword first. Thank you all for your continued support.

Finally, let me offer you a little poem, though I may be showing off before an expert:

At Jingmiao, the owner’s mutton soup shop reigns supreme; vinegar, chili, and salt are all kings.

Food and love, the flavor of an everyday home; pots and pans stir the universe.

Gold and silver adorn a single sheet of paper; it takes ages to reach the sinews and bones.

Ride the wind through spring’s third month; yin turns to yang, and June brings snow.

Getting along with everyone is an ancient art; seeking answers everywhere is hard to sustain today.

North above, south below, many shoulder bags; west to the left, east to the right, little to take away.

While your parents are still here, don’t sail too far; easy to say, hard to stay close.

Hope your children and grandchildren become scholars; trade a few small bills for some wine.

A record of life’s little moments.

This is a slice-of-life novel told in vignettes, much like Midnight Diner, and also the entrepreneurial story of an ordinary restaurant owner. The two plotlines run side by side before finally coming together. There are no grand, sweeping spectacles, only a gentle portrait of life in all its variety. Rich and mellow, it leaves a lingering aftertaste and is absolutely worth reading.
