That Man Is Called Zhengyang

This is the story of a man’s history of resistance against the Japanese, from his beginnings amid the flames of war through his growth and eventual maturity. In 1937, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident broke out. At the call of Sichuan’s provincial governor, Sichuan’s troops volunteered to leave the province and fight the Japanese. These troops turned their humiliation into resolve. With the determination that they would never return to Sichuan until the lost territory was recovered, three million brave men went off to war, and six hundred thousand soldiers were killed or wounded. They earned the renown of “No army without Sichuan.” Student-company commander Wang Zhengyang marched out with the Sichuan army’s Northern Route Column and fought across what are now Shanxi, Shandong, Hubei, Hunan, and other regions. In major battles such as the Battle of Taierzhuang, they engaged in a series of harrowing fights to the death against the Japanese forces. Through the ordeal of war, Wang Zhengyang forged bonds of life and death with his fellow Sichuan soldiers, while his love for the student Xia Ying was elevated amid blood and fire. Wang Hui, Wang Cheng, Wu Yi, He Hai, Li Wa, and the other soldiers under Wang Zhengyang came from different backgrounds and had very different personalities. But inspired by the greater cause of their nation, they all met the same fate. In the end, they gave their lives one after another to cover Wang Zhengyang’s escape, composing a stirring and heroic song of sacrifice.
