Farming with My Simpleminded Husband

Master Xu had three daughters, all clever and beautiful: Yuan Niang, Yu Niang, and Jiao Niang, each more outstanding than the last. The sisters loved one another and were always considerate and courteous. The Xu family matriarch, Madam Ji, had sworn sisterhood with the prefect’s wife, making their families close, and a betrothal had been arranged. By rights, marriages should follow birth order, but the old madam of the Wang family was ill and needed a wedding to bring her good fortune, so the marriage could not be delayed. The betrothal had never specified which daughter was to marry into the Wang family. Looking at her three lovely daughters, each as dear to her as the other, Madam Xu could not decide. Madam Xu: “The young master of the Wang family is eighteen. Yuan Niang, you’re sixteen...” Yuan Niang: “Mother, as the eldest daughter, I should yield to my younger sisters. Yu Niang should marry him!” Yu Niang: “Mother, with an elder sister above me and Jiao Niang below, I can’t take such a good match for myself!” Madam Xu: “Jiao Niang, you’re fourteen this year...” “I’ll leave it entirely to you, Mother!” Jiao Niang replied shyly. “Miss, Miss!” After running around the courtyard, the maid Ke’er returned with a face flushed with anger. “Miss, the eldest and second young ladies think you’re a fool! So much for being considerate and courteous. The Wangs may be the prefect’s family, but your stepmother-in-law is vicious, and your husband is a simpleton!” Jiao Niang smiled faintly. “A fool and a simpleton make a perfect match.” Once she entered the prefect’s household, her stepmother-in-law made things difficult for her. Her status as the young madam and third daughter of the Xu family was worth nothing. Before she could even return to her parents’ home after the wedding, she and her simpleton husband were sent off to the countryside estate. With no money or food, they had to make do for themselves. Jiao Niang took her simple-minded husband farming. As it turned out, his brute strength made him perfect for hauling things! It was bad enough that the Wang family bullied them, but when Jiao Niang returned to her parents’ home, her simple-minded husband was mocked and humiliated in every possible way by his two brothers-in-law. With nothing to eat or wear, the two brothers-in-law generously offered to help! Jiao Niang was puzzled: she had transmigrated, so why did her simple-minded husband seem so scheming?
