The Arrogant Doctor’s Sweet Wife

The cause: Their parents fought over their marriages, competing with one another in public and in private. Through their parents’ rivalry over marriage, land redistribution, family planning, their children’s achievements, and the misunderstandings and conflicts over building houses, the two grew up as strangers in public, but fell in love in secret. He wrote: That year, I pushed her into the water, and have regretted it ever since. I don’t know when she quietly moved into my heart. For her, I was willing to put on a white coat. Strangers in public, lovers in secret: their underground romance came so easily, and was so thrilling. I promised I would never let her suffer again. I promised she was my treasure, the one precious to my heart. The bright lights and wild nightlife weren’t who I really was. A house, fame, fortune: I never cared much about them. But I never expected one drunken night to sever our bond. She wrote: The reason we were strangers was the feud between our fathers. My illness began because of you. Back then, whenever I read a novel, I always saw your shadow flickering across the pages. I don’t know when you stole my heart. We missed and worried about each other across a thousand mountains and rivers. We chased each other in and out of the city. We passed messages through the walls between us. We defied our parents, endured the pressure, and held on, hoping to win in the end. But then I saw you lose control when you were drunk. Once broken, a mirror is hard to mend. Four hundred and ten letters, two years of beeper messages, countless phone calls, and this long, long road. I thought we were finally about to be together, but in the end, you cut everything off with your own hands. Something you’d expect to see only on TV happened to me with cruel irony: you got married, and I wasn’t the bride. When I think about it, our fate was like the stretch of wall you crossed every day. The distance was only a step, far too short. In the end, you let me down. I believe you didn’t do it for fame or money, and there’s no need to explain that you lost control while drunk. You only need to take responsibility for what you did. If she’s threatening to kill herself and can’t live without you, then go to her. I’ll be just fine without you. The ending: Tears streamed down her face as she smiled and tore the letter into pieces. The fragments, like snowflakes, were swept into the drain. From that moment on, the past washed away, and they remained strangers.
