Author: En Henzhai

Synopsis

Synopsis:

What kind of era is this, anyway? Why are child brides still a thing? He was the noble young master of the Qi family, so why had they sent him a tiny, uncouth country bumpkin? He could have put up with her being short, but she was also dark as coal. He could even accept her dark complexion, but the worst part was that she was a complete airhead!

He didn’t want her. He absolutely did not want her. But that damn little airhead kept clinging to him, calling out, “Brother Qi, wait for me! Brother Qi, wait for me!”

He wouldn’t wait. No way. He wished she would disappear this instant!

Excerpts:

[1]

She was six that year, and it was her first time at the Qi family home.

He was six that year, and it was the first time he had seen her.

They went to the same elementary school and were in the same class.

On her first day, when she introduced herself, she honestly said, “My name is Tong Xiaoxiao. I’m six years old. I like Qi Chenfeng, and my biggest dream is to become Qi Chenfeng’s wife!”

Little Qi Chenfeng, sitting below, turned bright red in an instant.

From then on, everyone at school knew that Qi Chenfeng had a little shadow of a wife named Tong Xiaoxiao.

Even the teachers would ask, “Qi Chenfeng, where’s Tong Xiaoxiao?”

How should I know where she is? Only an idiot would want to know!

[2]

She was thirteen that year. So was he.

The boys were beginning to have the first vague stirrings of romance.

Whenever he took the school belle’s hand, ready to share a kiss, Tong Xiaoxiao would appear out of nowhere. “Qi Chenfeng, Auntie Qi said you can only kiss me, not anyone else.”

“Why would I kiss a lump of charcoal?” Qi Chenfeng snapped.

Tong Xiaoxiao immediately shouted, “I’m telling Auntie Qi you’re keeping a mistress!”

Then she ran off, leaving Qi Chenfeng and the school belle completely stunned.

[3]

She was fourteen that year. So was he.

The first time her period came, blood stained her trousers.

“Qi Chenfeng, I can’t be your wife anymore.” She looked at him pitifully.

Just as he was about to celebrate, she turned around and showed him her backside. “Look, I have a terminal illness.”

Qi Chenfeng nearly threw up blood. “Tong Xiaoxiao, are you a pig? This just means you’re becoming a woman!”

“Huh?” Tong Xiaoxiao was baffled. Then she smiled and asked, “So does that mean I can still be your wife?”

“Is becoming my wife the only goal in your life?!”

“Yes!” she answered, exceptionally loudly.

Qi Chenfeng was speechless.

[4]

At nineteen, he went abroad to study.

At nineteen, she attended a mediocre university back home.

All his friends said she wasn’t good enough for him and told her to know her place and leave him as soon as possible.

But she thought she was his wife. Auntie Qi had said they were made for each other.

[5]

At twenty-three, he returned home.

At twenty-three, they got married.

On their wedding day, she wore a white wedding dress and waited for him to come for her.

Auntie Qi said she looked beautiful that day, more beautiful than ever before. But he never came to see her. Word was that he had eloped with the girlfriend he had met while studying abroad.

Auntie Qi said she would make it right and bring him back.

She smiled faintly. “There’s no need, Auntie Qi. I know he doesn’t love me!”

[6]

That year, he saw her again.

There was a little boy beside her. He looked very much like her, not especially handsome, but full of spirit.

“Xiaoxiao?” he called out in disbelief. When had that silly girl become such a poised and sophisticated woman?

“Long time no see.” She kept a polite distance.

“Xiaoxiao.” He couldn’t help reaching out to take her hand.

“Uncle, are you here to meet my mom on a blind date?” The little boy suddenly popped out and watched him warily.

“Huh?”

“If not, please move aside. My mom’s waiting to get married!” The little boy was utterly serious.

Qi Chenfeng stared at him and gritted his teeth. “I am here to meet your mom on a blind date!”
