Zimbardo Oral History

(us) Philip Zimbardo

119K01

In "Zimbardo's Oral History", Professor Zimbardo faces readers directly for the first time and recounts his life's journey. Wisdom can be seen in his growth story: at the age of 8, he summed up the rules of leaders and followers while playing with his peers; when he was studying, he was mistaken for the Sicilian Mafia and was isolated. Instead of being depressed, he began to pay attention to and think about the power of situations; while working on Broadway, he not only accumulated a lot of experience in "making customers pay", but also learned how to manage time and quickly switch between multiple tasks. In this book, Professor Zimbardo completely traces his 50 years of teaching and research experience, describing his four major contributions - the Stanford Prison Experiment, conceptualizing shyness, time perspective research, the causes, consequences and sources of inspiration for the Heroic Imagination Project. Readers can see how scientific research with vitality and creativity derived from life was born. In addition, you will also read about Zimbardo's experiences and stories of becoming a popular star teacher at Stanford, leading hundreds of students in anti-war protests, and fighting for employment opportunities for minorities and women. You will find that he is not only a scholar who questions human nature, but also a natural educator with a teacher's blood, a peace-loving activist who pays attention to the disadvantaged groups in society, and a great thinker with the world at heart. From a poor boy in the ghetto to a master respected by everyone, from an out-of-control prison experiment to helping people become a better version of themselves, "The Oral History of Zimbardo" will take us to witness the journey of a generation of psychological masters, and at the same time give us a deeper understanding of ourselves, the environment and human nature.

The Holocaust: a New History

L

320K0

Lawrence Rees spent twenty-five years interviewing survivors and perpetrators of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, and organically integrated eyewitness testimonies with recent academic research into this far-reaching history, revealing how this most notorious crime in human history was carried out. Rees believes that hatred of Jews was undoubtedly at the core of Nazi ideology, but we cannot fully understand the nature of the Holocaust without taking into account that the Nazis also planned to kill millions of non-Jews. Rees pointed out that there was no master plan for the massacre, but rather an escalation of a series of horrific crimes. There is no doubt that Hitler bears primary responsibility for what happened, but Rees also reminds us that the universality of guilt and the persistence of its consequences are "at the heart of the disturbing and evasive question."

Hitler's Krisma

(uk) Laurence Rees

Adolf Hitler was the chief culprit of a series of catastrophic historical events and perhaps the most unprecedented war criminal in world history. Filled with anger, incapable of establishing normal interpersonal relationships, unwilling to listen to dissenting opinions, and looking nothing like a leader, he succeeded in attracting thousands of followers and imposed unprecedented totalitarian rule over the German people. How did he do it? Many people who knew him were convinced that Hitler had a powerful influence on everyone who met him. But what role did this so-called "Charisma" play in Hitler's path to power? Lawrence Rees deeply examines the social, psychological and historical factors that influenced the formation of Hitler's personality. It is these factors that shaped Hitler's personality and gave him a unique charm that attracted followers, thereby dragging the entire Germany and even the world into the abyss of war.

Love and Sorrow: Tell Your Family Story

Li Yuhong

201K0

This is China's first oral family history. It comes from a famous documentary with high sociological value and attracting more and more public attention: "Family Seal - Family Album". This series is a documentary project initiated by the City University of Hong Kong. It started in 2013 and aims to produce the stories of 100 ordinary families. Currently, 58 episodes have been completed, with more than 70 authors, and it is still being continued today. At the internal public screening, these documentaries brought many teachers and classmates to tears. Most of these 58 episodes tell stories about their grandparents, parents, and mothers. They are ordinary people and strangers that students are familiar with. In order to complete the family photo album, they returned to strange relatives and tried to understand their past. Here are a few examples briefly - "Dongyan Qiaotou 60-2" by Zhou Fengting, which later won many awards, records how her grandmother, a 91-year-old mother-in-law from the countryside of Zhejiang, supported her family in troubled times by running an independent gang. However, her contribution was not known to her descendants. It was not until Zhou returned to her strange grandmother, went to church with her, and chatted with her that she slowly began to understand how much she respected this grandmother. Chen Meng's work "Amnesia" tells the story of how her nearly 90-year-old grandparents slowly bid farewell to their glorious past and entered a life of amnesia in old age in their twilight years. This short film has no specific historical background, and even ignores the larger historical background, because the old couple, who both worked in the army, lived through the Cultural Revolution and the most turbulent years without any danger. However, the author captures the details of a pair of elderly people's lives and expresses the problems faced by the elderly society in a touching way. And the young people born in the 1990s participated in the creation. Among the 21 short films they have produced, 10 have chosen to film their parents, and the other 11 are stories about their ancestors. Their stories seem to be far away from the heavy history of the Three Antis, Five Antis, and the Cultural Revolution, but most of their parents were born in the 1960s. Their stories are actually about the history of the thirty years after the reform and opening up, and describe the changes in ordinary Chinese families over the years. The most striking feature of students born in the 1990s is that they have more desire to express themselves and have no more historical burdens. They are very concerned about their identity authentication and are not worried about exposing their family scandals. For example, many students come from divorced or single-parent families. Instead of avoiding these family problems, they are willing to use the opportunity of filming to get to the bottom of things. Among the 21 short films produced in 2015, one is "Neai". This classmate is a Chinese immigrant who immigrated to New Zealand at the age of 13. He graduated from a university in New Zealand and came to Hong Kong to study for a master's degree. If she wasn't involved in the project, she would look like a carefree girl from a good family. However, because of this project, I learned that her parents were divorced when she was young, and she didn't meet her long-lost and successful father until junior high school, and was sent to New Zealand to study by her father. However, the bad blood between father and daughter has formed for many years. The daughter has always wanted to uncover this mystery and chose to photograph her father. After many exchanges and even arguments, father and daughter reached an understanding. The sociological significance behind this film is that during the more than thirty years of reform and opening up, the success of many people was based on the sacrifice of their families. Family members, especially children who lack but crave parental care and attention when they grow up, become the source of all their anger and depression when they grow up. This book retains the oral style of these stories, systematically sorts them out, and provides them with the creators' unique and honest creative notes. The whole article is written in colloquial language, which is smooth and clear, and has high sociological value, psychological value and emotional impact. If this book can be successfully published, it will be an innovation of similar subject matter. The promotion of this book and the echo of the documentary can form a resonance, expand the radius of influence, and reduce the pressure of book marketing. The basic conditions for launching in series are met. Sign digital rights at the same time.

"Three Words and Two Patterns" is the pinnacle of Chinese classical short stories in vernacular. It tells a secular story at a time and is called the ancestor of modern lace magazines. This time I re-edited the excerpts and found the author to rewrite it into a more modern language, but at the same time retained the classical charm of the original work. Practitioners need theoretical guidance, but most theoretical researchers do not have enough practical experience. Qi Hongshen has been engaged in oral history interviews and research since the early 1980s. He organized more than 80 experts and scholars from all over the country (including Taiwan and Hong Kong) to undertake the national educational science project "Investigation and Research on the Oral History of Japanese Invasion of China Colonial Education". It has collected the oral histories of more than 2,300 people who experienced it, as well as historical photos and objects, forming a complete, systematic, three-dimensional, and multi-dimensional system of witnesses, testimonies, and evidence of the Japanese invasion of China. It has had a wide social impact at home and abroad, and is recognized by the academic community as the earliest, largest, and most standardized oral history project.

In January 1949, he served as acting president after Chiang Kai-shek resigned from power. In December of the same year, he went to the United States. In 1965, he returned to his roots and issued a statement in Beijing, determined to contribute to the reunification of the motherland. Li Zongren served in the military throughout his life and went through countless wars such as protecting the country, protecting the law, the Northern Expedition, Jiang Gui, the Anti-Japanese War, and the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, which directly affected the trend of modern Chinese politics and history. While living in the United States, Li Zongren was invited by Columbia University and under the auspices of the "East Asian Institute·Chinese Oral History Department". In 1958, he began to personally narrate his more than thirty years of military career and the major military events he participated in. The historian Tang Degang compiled and wrote it, and it became "Memoirs of Li Zongren". This book is also an original history book that requires the most study, the most labor, and the most difficulties among Tang Degang's personal published works. It took more than twenty years from the initial consultation to the publication. "Memoirs of Li Zongren" is a complete record of Li Zongren's extraordinary life career, and it is also the most faithful portrayal of Li's mental journey at each stage of his life. It completely preserves Li Zongren's true face in Chinese history and indirectly reveals many little-known political insider stories or military secrets. It has extremely important reference value for understanding and studying modern Chinese history.

Hu Shi's Oral Autobiography

Tang Degang

200K0

"Hu Shi's Oral Autobiography" is between an autobiography and a biography. It is the best introductory book to understand Hu Shi's life and studies. In the 1950s, Hu accepted the invitation of Columbia University's "Chinese Oral History Department" and was interviewed by Tang Degang. He orally recounted his life in English and completed sixteen formal recordings in 1958. This book was translated by Tang Degang based on the recording, cross-referenced and comprehensively, and was hand-edited by Hu Shi in 1959. This is also a proud "oral history project" that Tang Degang completed in person with Hu Shi at Columbia University and with a tape recorder. Here, Hu Shi reviews the course of his academic research throughout his life, from devoting himself to the literary revolution, to examining the history of Chinese philosophy, to rediscovering the history of Zen Buddhism, to critically studying vernacular novels, and recalling the main ideas in literature, history, philosophy, etc. This is a small book that covers all aspects of Hu Shi's knowledge, thoughts, life, family background, etc. Tang Degang's annotations and comments after translating Hu Shi's English oral narration into Chinese are even more must-read good articles. On the one hand, some memory errors and unspeakable secrets in Hu Shi's oral narration are restored through Tang's annotations; on the other hand, Tang's annotations expand and deepen the content and viewpoints of the oral narration. In response to the questions raised in the text, he also elaborates on his own comments on Hu Shi himself and related figures and events, allowing readers to understand Hu Shi and his era more clearly.

This is a rare masterpiece of oral history. The narrator, Ms. Tang Shixia, was the first wife of Pu Jie, the brother of the last emperor Pu Yi, the niece of the famous concubines Zhen and Jin, and a close friend of the last empress Wanrong and the last imperial concubine Wenxiu. She was one of the last members of the royal family to leave the Forbidden City at the end of the Qing Dynasty. This oral history details the rise and fall of the Tara family of Tang Shixia and his concubines Zhen and Jin. It introduces little-known details of life in the Qing palace, and especially reveals the role of the Japanese military and political elite in organizing the establishment of the Puppet Manchukuo. On this occasion, the plot to force Pu Jie to divorce her and remarry Saga Hiroshi, a descendant of the Japanese aristocracy, was to enable the next emperor of the puppet Manchukuo to have Japanese ancestry after the heirless Pu Yi stepped down, thereby fully controlling China. In addition, this oral history also describes Tang Shixia's high achievements and attainments in painting and poetry, and provides a detailed explanation of her teaching life at the University of Hong Kong in her later years. The historical facts and unique experiences stated in the book can provide valuable reference data for future generations to study past history.
