"Liang Beifang," she said, "you said last time... that you took in that little dog."

Her voice faltered, growing softer but clearer all the while:

"Could you... take me in too?"

When Liang Beifang was twenty-seven, his family gained a dog, a cat, and a younger sister.

To him, raising a child was no different from raising a pet. Like a responsible caretaker, he fed her three meals a day and looked after her with care, thinking that was all he needed to do to safely watch her grow up.

But Liang Beifang forgot that He Qingyun was different from a pet.

A pet could go find a mate. He Qingyun couldn't.

A pet could cuddle up to someone else. He Qingyun couldn't.

A pet could fall for someone else. He Qingyun couldn't.

So when he saw his younger sister once again accept an invitation from the man who had a crush on her, he couldn't sit still.

He pretended to be drunk, buried his head in the crook of her neck with red-rimmed eyes, and took the chance to slip off the man's coat draped around her. His voice was muffled and plaintive.

"Didn't you say you'd stay with your big brother for the rest of your life?"

"Don't go looking for anyone else, okay?"

"Your big brother will take care of you for the rest of your life."
