The man who raised Zhaozhao died in that catastrophe. All that remained was a tiny, dark flame and a ring. There wasn't even a body.

Zhaozhao kept watch over his empty grave for three years. Later, he went to many places, including the competition where that man had once easily taken first place. Zhaozhao struggled to earn fifth. Many people praised him, saying that at only twenty, he was truly worthy of inheriting the legacy of the ancient sage.

He left again, visiting the little house deep in the Beastlands where that man had trained, and the home where he had lived as a teenager. There was hardly anyone left there, just the old butler and a few members of the side branches stationed there.

Dust had settled over the library. The man had said he used to love studying techniques and cultivation there. The back hill had been swallowed by wild, overgrown plants. That man had said there was a cave on the hill where he learned to make pills.

Zhaozhao lay on his back on the hillside, watching the sun sink in the west. He wondered if, thirty years earlier, that young man had collapsed from exhaustion after training and looked out at the same view.

But he would never see that view again.

Zhaozhao thought he had nowhere left to go, either.

Suddenly, all the tears he'd held back for ten years fell. Zhaozhao missed him.
