Hoshimiya Rinku discovers that he's transmigrated into the body of a very important person. Both the good guys and the bad guys jokingly call him their "mascot" (they're not joking).
Not only does his Public Security superior trust him enough to put an elite undercover agent in his sole care, but the criminal organization the agent has infiltrated also insists on bringing him along on every mission.
Hoshimiya, fresh out of assassin school: Skipping the internship and going straight to the core team? Sounds awesome.
But who is the undercover agent he's supposed to protect? Furuya?
Hagiwara, Matsuda, Gin, Akai, Scotch, Conan... They all seem like they could be Furuya. Whatever, herding a flock of sheep is still herding a flock of sheep.
He suspects a passerby is about to attack a police officer, so he invites Matsuda to abduct the passerby first, then escorts him to the police station.
He suspects an ambush on the other side, so he expertly blows up the enemy's sniper's nest and teams up with Akai to pose as a helpless civilian asking the FBI for help.
He suspects the target of a mission is planning to double-cross them, so he imitates Gin's voice to call the police, then joins Gin in making a righteous arrest, giving Gin a chance to relive his days at the police academy...
Hoshimiya Rinku curls up wearily in a beanbag chair, his cowlick drooping. "Sigh, the greater your ability, the greater your responsibility. Why are there so many suspicious and dangerous people?"
The "Furuyas": ...Aren't you the most suspicious one here?! Can the mascot please stay put?
But as it turned out, the man he'd abducted was a serial killer, the other rooftop really was hiding multiple people lying in wait for the FBI, and the organization's target had been using the organization to kill people all along...
The mascot, Hoshimiya Rinku, had helped them a great deal.
Both the good guys and the bad guys tried to recruit him. Only when they realized he'd mistaken them for Furuya did they understand why they'd been getting his protection.
The fake Furuyas: "...Right, I'm Furuya."
The real Furuya, in the middle of a rendezvous, listens as his superior jokingly asks what he thinks of the mascot.
Furuya suddenly gets a bad feeling. "The mascot Public Security gave me?"
[Bonus Scene]
Hoshimiya Rinku is pressed against a wall, completely dumbfounded. His straight-guy alarm goes off. "Bourbon?"
His fingers are forcibly pried apart, and a man's warmth fills the spaces between them.
Furuya Rei's gaze is dark. He wedges a knee between Rinku's, and the sensation flows from the blood vessels beneath the skin, slowly sinking into his bones.
For some reason, Furuya smiles. "Do you know what my real name is?"
PS:
1. An everyday comedy with a delusional-misunderstandings vibe, absurd antics that torment the whole cast, and plenty of sticking close to Furuya. No supernatural elements, angst, or melodrama. All five members of the group survive.
2. Some parts of the timeline have been changed, with some original elements added.
3. The blurb has been revised, so please refer to the latest version.

"The Retired Assassin Becomes a Star at the Police Academy"
[Lazy Assassin: Furuya taught me everything]
The retired assassin Xili Jiu transmigrates into a new student at the police academy.
When he books a five-star hotel at the mission site to keep up his lazy lifestyle, a blond classmate says without expression, "Why not book a tour group and bring a couple of assistants, too?"
Xili Jiu thinks Furuya has a point.
He threatens a murderer with a gun and makes him drive and run errands, then tours Osaka with Matsuda.
He kidnaps the criminal who'd been tailing an undercover FBI agent and makes him their tour guide, then sneaks into the FBI headquarters in America with Furuya.
He captures the leader of a criminal gang and makes them put on a show for entertainment, then visits a hot spring on a summer island with Scotch while listening to a concert.
Big Ben, ski resorts, Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto...
From his days at the police academy to his undercover work in the organization after graduation, his lazy trail only gets longer. Crime rates plummet, while the number of complaint letters skyrockets.
When Matsuda, Hagiwara, and the others confront him, Xili Jiu remains modest with everyone, offering a shy smile. "Furuya taught me all of this. I owe it to his advice."
In the distance, Furuya sneezes several times in a row, feeling as if the weight on his back is getting heavier and heavier.
Xili Jiu considers the matter: His long hair could use some care. Next time there's an organization mission, he should threaten Gin into driving him and Akai to a local barber shop in his Porsche.
Gin must know all about hair care.
Furuya realizes that Gin has been giving him trouble lately.
PS:
A lighthearted, funny slice-of-life story. After transmigrating, Xili Jiu is firmly on the good guys' side. He was 25 when he retired in his previous life.
Theme: There is only one truth.
