Jiang Feiye returned from an apocalypse where not a blade of grass could grow, back to the colorful, green world of the 1970s.
Just as she was getting ready to enjoy her retirement, her stepmother arranged for her to take her stepsister's place as the bride of a border guard.
The night Jiang Feiye left, her stepmother sipped wine and secretly rejoiced.
The northern frontier was bitterly cold. For half the year, heavy snow buried the forests and mountains, cutting off supplies and trapping everyone inside. There wasn't even a blade of grass to eat. The cold could split your cheeks wide open!
Jiang Feiye might not survive, and even if she did make it back, that pretty, dewy face of hers would be ruined! She'd never compare with her stepmother's own daughter again!

Jiang Feiye arrived where her husband was stationed.
All around her stretched vast, deep forests and layers of mountains. Even the leaves, in shades of red, orange, yellow, and green, were a feast for the eyes.
When the snow fell, everything was blanketed in white, like a fairyland.
After enduring the desolation of the apocalypse, she was delighted, and settled right in.
The vast forest was mysterious and extraordinary. Some even said a gold mine lay hidden there.
She gathered mushrooms, dug up reishi, planted ginseng and grew wood ear mushrooms...
She raised chickens, ducks, cats, and dogs; caught rabbits, fought wild boars, clubbed musk deer, and scooped fish from the river...
She whipped up fragrant dishes like wild mushrooms with green peppers, goose stewed in an iron pot, and roasted rabbit and goat...
And best of all, her bargain-bin husband was a looker and an officer. His family had served in the military for three generations. He was fit and strong, handed over his pay without a fuss, and did all the housework whenever he was home.
Jiang Feiye was completely satisfied. When her husband was promoted and transferred out, she had somehow become even more radiant, much to the fury of her stepmother and her family!

Cheng Linhai's marriage had been arranged by a fellow soldier. To be honest, he'd only seen a photo of the woman and didn't really care whether he liked her.
But the girl thought being stationed at the frontier would be too hard, so she backed out and offered to send her stepsister in her place.
Any man would be angry at being rejected like that.
So when the stepsister, Jiang Feiye, arrived as his bride, Cheng Linhai wasn't very warm toward her.
He was deeply grateful that Jiang Feiye had agreed to marry him in her stepsister's place, but how long could a pretty young woman with such slender arms and legs possibly last here?
Even so, Cheng Linhai treated her like a child, indulging her while giving her respect and freedom.
Then one day, a bear attacked the residential compound. His beautiful wife slapped the beast to the ground, and Cheng Linhai was stunned.
Oh, so his wife wasn't delicate and helpless after all.
It turned out she was thriving here. She led everyone into the mountains to gather mushrooms, catch rabbits, and fish, and even discovered a gold mine for the country!
She was also a skilled fighter. She organized local villagers to stand guard and patrol, helped capture several enemy agents, and earned commendations from her superiors. She was even promoted ahead of schedule to a key position in the government.
Cheng Linhai finally relaxed and stopped holding back his affection.
But his wife blushed and pushed him away. “Brother Linhai, have you been getting a little too clingy lately? Didn't we agree our marriage was just for show, and that we'd stay out of each other's business?”
Cheng Linhai: “...”
Honey, I'm sorry!
