Ballad of the Homecoming

Lu Zhiyu is surnamed Lu, but she lives with the Gao family.

Xu Tianshu is surnamed Xu, but he lives with the Gao family, too.

Lu Zhiyu was fostered by the Gao family, and they were paid for it.

Xu Tianshu’s mother had gone back to her own family and refused to leave, living off them for free.

So Lu Zhiyu had an easier time of it than Xu Tianshu.

At last, she had someone she could pick on.

But boys were precious, unlike unwanted Lu Zhiyu.

Xu Tianshu could disappear in the blink of an eye.

When Lu Zhiyu played house with him as a child,

she thought they really would get married when they grew up.

When Lu Zhiyu grew up and married Chen Yuxiu,

she thought they would be together for the rest of their lives.

Maybe she didn’t love them all that much.

She just really wanted a home of her own.
