The Old-Things Restorer of Xiangua Slope [The 1980s]

Antique restorer Wen Yu was on her way to a job when an earthquake struck. When she woke again, she was on a train carrying educated youth back to the city from the countryside.

The train rumbled on. Carrying memories of two lifetimes, she officially stepped into that old-fashioned courtyard house.

Her grandmother favored boys, always taking her cousin from her uncle's family over everyone else. To her, Wen Yu was nothing but a jinx.

Her grandfather was gentle and kind, always sneaking pocket money to the granddaughter who had borne the family's hardships in their stead.

Her parents had only two daughters, and wished they could give the sisters all the love in the world.

Her aunt, divorced and back at her parents' home, was welcomed back by Wen Yu's parents. Outspoken and fiery, she treated Wen Yu and her sister like her own daughters.

There were plenty of people in the family, but Wen Yu found their lively days full of warmth and flavor.

Life was comfortable, her family was happy, and returning to her old trade seemed like a fine idea.

Whether it was a wobbly old table or chair, a cracked wooden chest, or an old screen whose wood was riddled with mold, she could restore anything she touched to its original condition.

Shen Nian worked at the Public Security Bureau. He knew his way around equipment and could drive, and his family had been neighbors with the Wens for decades.

He joined the military at fifteen. Back then, Wen Yu was still a little girl who loved jumping rope.

When they met again, he had come home on leave, while Wen Yu was packing to go to the countryside.

This time, he caught a thief who had stolen the very old screen Wen Yu had just restored.
