On the first day Meng Yi moved in with her aunt, she ran into her brother, Xiang Xingyu, confronting his nemesis in an alley.
The two sides were on the verge of a fight. Meng Yi hid behind her brother and sneaked a glance at the person across from them.
The boy was tall and lean, with a cold, stern face. His dark eyes were like magnetic whirlpools, deep and still.
"Shen Jie, that's enough for today." Xiang Xingyu shielded his sister. "See you at school."

In everyone's eyes, Shen Jie was an oddball.
He didn't like talking to people and never looked anyone in the eye. He was extremely aloof.
But if someone provoked him, he would strike back viciously and without mercy. Even if the dean of discipline showed up, he'd beat his opponent down and make them apologize.
Xiang Xingyu and Shen Jie didn't get along, and he was afraid his sister might get caught in the crossfire. He often reminded Meng Yi to stay away from Shen Jie.
Besides, his sister was quiet and well-behaved. There was no way she'd have anything to do with a student like Shen Jie.

Some time later.
One day, Xiang Xingyu saw a group of people provoking Shen Jie.
He stuck around to watch, wondering whether the five or six of them could land a hit on Shen Jie. But Shen Jie simply turned and walked away.
His opponents were baffled by the strange behavior. They asked what he was playing at. If he wanted to fight, he should just say so.
Shen Jie replied coolly, "I'm in a hurry."

"..."
The sun must have risen in the west.
Xiang Xingyu returned home, perplexed. Meng Yi wasn't there. When he asked, he was told she'd gone to the convenience store to buy something...
In the alley, Shen Jie had been waiting for a long time.
He stared at the entrance until that familiar figure appeared. At last, the coldness in his eyes melted.
Meng Yi looked him over, saw nothing unusual, and handed him the notes. "I have to go." If her brother found out, there'd be trouble.
As she started to leave, someone gently tugged at her school uniform.
The boy lowered his head. His voice was stiff, but there was a hint of softness in it. "I didn't fight."
"I listened to everything you said."

Later, Xiang Xingyu and Shen Jie became friends after fighting each other, and eventually became close brothers.
Shen Jie went to a university next to Meng Yi's. Xiang Xingyu entrusted his precious little sister to his friend and warned him, "Keep an eye on her for me. Especially watch out for those guys, got it?"
Thinking of the kiss they'd shared in the stairwell the day before, Shen Jie gave a hoarse "Mm."
