The Widow and Her AI Lover

The first year after her fiance's spaceship was lost in an accident, Qu Qiao used their chat logs to build an AI model that looked and sounded remarkably like him.

With this "digital life," she pretended he was still alive and got through the hardest days.

A year later, the missing person's death was officially confirmed. More than the insurance payout or his inheritance, she wanted his personal data, so she could make the model more realistic.

But her fiance had left a will: he gave Qu Qiao the rights to his work and all his property, but ordered all his personal data to be destroyed.

In the pain of losing him for a second time, Qu Qiao became even more determined to improve the AI. Yet no matter how she adjusted its instructions, the AI always strayed from her expectations, becoming like...

...someone else.

"Isn't the one you love the me standing right in front of you?"

"What did I do wrong? Don't give up on me, don't--"

Qu Qiao deleted the saved files over and over, as if she were repeatedly killing her past lover.

At last, one day, Qu Qiao felt she was getting better and made some new friends in the "cloud."

When she heard a visitor notification, she removed her brain-computer interface and checked the monitor. A gloomy, unfamiliar face appeared on the screen.

The voice coming through was distorted, but it made every nerve ending in her body ache.

His voice, someone else's face.

"Don't..." the ghostly figure began. "...with... him..."

A voice message played through the speakers. "Miss Cookie, aren't you coming back?"

"I... am..."
