Lu Zhan carries a terrible blood feud and has made many enemies in the jianghu, living every day with his life on the line.
His friends have urged him again and again to let go of his desire to kill and retire from the jianghu, so he can at least avoid dying in the wilderness. He is gravely poisoned and has little time left. Knowing he won't meet a peaceful end, he jokes in a letter, "Don't worry. I've already found someone to collect my body."
By chance, he came across a little girl named Shen Zeling. Her family had worked as yin-yang masters for generations, painting the faces of the dead and collecting their bodies.
When he rescued her, she was holding a brush and slowly painting her own face in front of a mirror. A dagger she planned to use to end her life lay beside her.
Lu Zhan's own life was a wretched one, but he couldn't stand watching someone else treat herself so cruelly. He tossed her a silver ingot and hired her for one last job: "I'm about to die. Collect my body for me."
Shen Zeling's hand paused for a moment, then she took the silver.
From then on, he had a little shadow who followed him around, waiting to collect his body. Whenever he fought to the death, Shen Zeling would pull along her coffin cart and quietly wait for him to die.
Later, the poison flared during one such fight. As he fell into a pool of blood, he felt a trace of relief.
With the little girl watching over him, he wasn't afraid of becoming a lonely ghost.
When he woke again, he was trapped in a cramped darkness, a burial coin wedged in his mouth. He heard the wheels creaking as they turned, and he couldn't move a muscle.
He finally managed to make a sound. The coffin lid lifted a crack, and the blinding light made tears stream down his face.
Shen Zeling touched his face. "You said you were mine once you died."
