Duning, a Buddhist maiden, was born from an ancient prayer bead that had been lost in the mountains. Calm and free of worldly desires, with unfathomable cultivation, she protected a peaceful corner of this chaotic world and was revered as the mountain god of Fuqing Mountain.
Later, a strange cat demon wandered onto Fuqing Mountain. Duning paid him no mind and let him do as he pleased. But the cat had lost his powers after being badly injured, and kept trying to sneak in and steal her candle flame, day and night.
In the end, he refused to leave the temple. One moment he would be sleeping on her meditation cushion, the next he would be sharpening his claws on her wooden fish, and every so often he would push the offerings off the table.
Duning divined that he was burdened by an obsession, but had never harmed anyone, so she turned a blind eye. She might as well consider it a little pet in the temple.
But the little cat demon had no gratitude. Once he regained his powers, he took human form, shredded the temple doors with his claws, and left without looking back.
Then one day, she heard that a cat demon had become a demon god in the Evil Domain, causing mayhem and stirring up trouble, occupying a mountain and fighting all the other demon gods.
Another day, a crowd of badly bruised cultivators suddenly showed up outside Duning’s temple.
“Buddhist Maiden, your cat demon is running wild out there. You have to go deal with him!”
Li Yao was born an evil demon with a wicked soul, but before he had the chance to do any evil, those wretched cultivators hunted him down and beat him back into his original form. He ended up in an unfamiliar place.
The mountain god here was incredibly powerful. He hid his demon nature, then snuck into her temple, certain he could steal her incense offerings, recover his powers, and return to the Evil Domain for revenge. But somehow, he failed every time!
Instead, Li Yao had to listen to her recite boring Buddhist scriptures every day. She even made him help protect the mountain and rescue people, leaving him with no freedom at all.
As time passed, he became more and more convinced that he was evil by nature and didn’t belong here.
At last, he found an opportunity to escape. Once free, Li Yao charged into the Evil Domain and began to make his mark.
Just as he was reaching the height of his arrogance, one day Li Yao felt the base of his tail twitch and a chill run down his spine.
A little demon rushed in: “Master! Your master is here to collect you!”
In the distance, the immaculate Buddhist Maiden stood in white, commanding the elements as she lowered her eyes to recite scripture. The prayer beads she gently rolled in her hand seemed to have become a shackle around his neck, squeezing the air from his lungs.
His fur stood on end in an instant.
