1.
Pei Runing had a nightmare.
In it, he had spent eighteen years living in luxury with the Pei family before learning he was the fake young master.
On the very day the real young master was brought home, everyone told him, "You've always been the treasure of the Pei family. No one could ever change how much we love you."
Pei Runing believed them and stayed with the Pei family.
But in less than three months, everything changed.
The parents who had once treated him with such affection glared at him. "Just as expected, you don't have the Pei family's genes. You're not fit to be seen in public."
His older brother, who had always given him everything he asked for, looked down at him coldly through his gold-rimmed glasses, not a hint of warmth in his eyes. "Apologize, or get out of the Pei family."
His uncle, who had always doted on him, stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the manor, watching impassively as Pei Runing stood in the rain all night. He had a bodyguard deliver a single message: "Get lost."
His childhood friend, who had grown up with him and always looked after him, wrenched his hand away and shoved him down the stairs. "Haven't you enjoyed eighteen years of wealth and privilege enough? A fake is still a fake. If you have any sense, you'll leave the Pei family on your own."
His friends, who had once protected him like the apple of their eye, led the pack in cornering him at school and threatening him. "If you don't start behaving, don't blame me for forgetting our history."
But these were the very people who had begged him to stay in the first place.

Pei Runing woke from the nightmare, anxious and on edge all day.
The people around him noticed how distracted he was and did everything they could to cheer him up, showering him with even more affection than before.
Little by little, Pei Runing relaxed, reassuring himself that it had only been a dream, nothing more.
Then, one sunny afternoon, a young man identical to the real young master from his dream was brought into the Pei home. His parents introduced him with bright smiles. "Ningning, this is your second older brother. Come on, say hello."
Pei Runing turned ice-cold, as if he had fallen into a frozen lake.

Everything from the dream came rushing back, vivid in Pei Runing's mind.
He refused to be thrown away by everyone like trash, just as he had been in the dream. He didn't want any of them anymore.
So when his parents took his hand, just as they had in the dream, and asked him to stay, Pei Runing slowly pulled his hand away. His voice was soft, but firm. "No. I'm grateful to the Pei family for raising me for eighteen years, but I shouldn't keep claiming what doesn't belong to me. I'll pack my things and leave the Pei family at once."
Silence filled the room.
His parents' expressions changed abruptly, their faces full of panic.
The eldest Pei brother, who had brought him home, went cold as ice. His expression was frighteningly grim.
Pei Runing's uncle, who had come to offer his congratulations, stopped in his tracks at the doorway. His refined face darkened as he turned to look at Pei Runing.

That night.
A large hand wearing a jadeite ring gripped Pei Runing's slender waist and pinned him across a muscular thigh.
"Ningning, say that again. What is it you want to do?" His uncle's elegant voice, smooth as a cello, rang in his ear. It sounded no different from usual, yet somehow sent a chill down his spine.
Pei Runing's eyes reddened with fear. Before he could speak, someone knocked on the bedroom door. His eldest brother's tall frame forced its way into the room, and he slowly removed his gold-rimmed glasses.
"Ningning's gotten bold. Now he even dares to talk about leaving."
Downstairs.
His childhood friend and his friend arrived at the Pei home one after the other, their faces dark.
