Until she was eighteen, Ling Anqiao lived with her two older sisters, two younger sisters, and the rest of her large family, all crammed into a cramped two-bedroom apartment. From a young age, she understood that if she wanted something, she had to fight for it herself. From then on, she never let her false smile slip.
Over the twenty-eight years of her life, she had become a compulsive liar, willing to do anything to get what she wanted. At a young age, she had already become a rising star in medicine.
After an accident sent her back ten years, she saw her eighteen-year-old self, all sharp edges and ambition, standing at the podium. In front of the crowd, she couldn't help laughing aloud, because only she knew how she had gotten that chance to speak.
Afterward, eighteen-year-old Ling Anqiao approached her, called her "big sister" in a soft voice, and asked her name. Qiao Xu suddenly laughed like a madwoman. Once she stopped, she said, "Qiao Xu. Xu, as in hypocritical."
Ling Anqiao froze, then habitually smiled with her eyes. "That's a very special name, Big Sister. I'll be sure to remember it."
Oh, really?
Perhaps Qiao Xu was the only person in the world who knew that whenever Ling Anqiao lied or snatched resources, she kept a calm, fake smile on her face while digging her nails into her palms until the skin broke.
At twenty-eight, Qiao Xu had been abandoned by everyone and was left to complain about life's hypocrisy.
What about her eighteen-year-old self?
As fireworks filled the night sky, a girl shone onstage at the university town, singing. When she won an award, her family embraced her. Qiao Xu stood below, across the crowd, watching her from a decade away.
A girl excitedly raised her camera to take a picture. Qiao Xu asked without thinking, "You like her?"
The girl, not understanding why, nodded sincerely.
Qiao Xu smiled freely and brightly. "What a coincidence. I like her too."
