[Obsessive love is still love] [Both are pretending] [Neither of them is human]
In the Year 387 of the Great Voyage, the cargo ship Mary mysteriously vanished in the Siren Sea, with no survivors. The only thing left from its final transmission was a broken song. Afterward, tales of the “Siren’s Curse” spread far and wide.
Never sail into those deep waters beneath the moonlight.
Three hundred years later, Zhuo Er turned off a recommended short video about the “Sea Demon’s Curse” and, camera on her back, stepped onto the dock of Siren Island.
She had come to film a documentary about local maritime customs. The moment she entered the Indigenous village, she felt a chill run down her back.
She followed someone’s gaze and turned around.
A tall man leaned against a tree with his arms crossed. His skin was the color of wheat, his muscles well-defined, and his brow deeply set. He watched her in silence.
She instinctively smiled at him. His expression didn’t change, and his gaze was deep and unreadable.
Zhuo Er: “...” She awkwardly lowered her hand.
The islanders told her the man was named Jiang Xunxiao. No one knew where he came from, but he could understand the tides and predict storms, so they revered him as a prophet sent by the Sea God.
While gathering material, Zhuo Er’s camera kept drifting toward him:
His silhouette on the reefs, his profile as he gazed out to sea beneath the moonlight, his fingers as he lowered his eyes to sort fishing line... Whenever Jiang Xunxiao looked back at her, her heart skipped a beat.
She had finished filming long ago, but still couldn’t bring herself to leave. She wanted to say goodbye to Jiang Xunxiao, but was afraid she was imagining things.
Never mind. It wasn’t as if he would ask her to stay.
But on the day of her return trip, the boat sank in an accident, and she plunged into the icy depths.
Just before she lost consciousness, a strong, sinewy hand seized her and dragged her out of the abyss.
When she awoke, she was locked inside Jiang Xunxiao’s home, burning with a fever and deliriously repeating, “Let me go...”
His hand paused as he fed her medicine. “No.”
Zhuo Er tried to escape several times, but each time he hauled her back. She gritted her teeth and shouted, “What are you trying to do? Keep me prisoner?”
Jiang Xunxiao wrapped an arm around her waist, his fingertips brushing her lips. “Stay.”
She struggled with all her might, but his voice seemed to possess a magic that slowly crushed her reason.
That night, the damp sea breeze drifted over the edge of the bed. Her ankle trembled in his burning palm, and she couldn’t tell whether she was shivering or surrendering.
One moonlit night, she managed to escape. Her little boat had barely cleared the bay when an engine roared behind her. He was coming after her.
Zhuo Er stopped the boat and turned to face him, the sea breeze lifting her long hair.
“Jiang Xunxiao,” she called softly, her voice carrying the faintest trace of a song. “Have you heard the legend of the sirens?”
