My Days as a Female Star Abroad

When she wakes up, Yelena has transmigrated into the body of a Russian girl in 1999.

Her savings are only enough to buy a wool hat, and her future looks tragic. She will freeze to death in an alley on Christmas Eve at the turn of the millennium, and the newspaper report about her will be no bigger than a matchbox.

Yet the face in the mirror is dazzlingly beautiful, with gray eyes like a frozen lake. It's a face made for the camera.

To survive, Yelena wraps herself in a secondhand fur coat from a flea market, her nose red with cold, and squeezes into a casting studio crowded with aspiring performers.

.

Starting with bit parts and moving on to independent films, she uses her acting to tear off the ingenue label and make the Moscow Film Festival's red carpet hold its breath for a young face from a new era.

The newspapers go from sneering to feverish praise, oligarchs extend offers, and Hollywood sends her scripts.

The wild rose of Siberia begins to sweep the millennium.
