Making Top-Tier Stars Famous in the Millennium Era

Shen Li wakes up in 2003 with only twenty-three yuan in her pocket.

She has lived in a basement and eaten instant noodles past their expiration date. At her lowest point, she crouched beside the crew meal stand on a film set, fanning herself with a newspaper she had picked up.

But she knows a secret: Among all the nobodies splashed across this newspaper, she knows who will shoot to fame in three years, who will become a legend in five, who will take the whole country by storm with a single show, and who will become an overnight sensation on the Spring Festival Gala.

So she starts doing one thing:

Betting on them.

Zhou Yu, a newcomer who has spent three years playing bit parts, gets an audition thanks to Shen Li paying out of her own pocket. The investor calls her crazy, but she just smiles. Three months later, Zhou Yu unexpectedly breaks through with a supporting role, and the show sets a ratings record.

She rents a recording studio for a street singer busking in an underground passage. Six months later, his songs are ringing out on every street corner.

She finds funding for an impoverished film student who has yet to graduate, so he can make his debut feature. Two years later, he takes home a Golden Horse Award.

Back one, and one becomes a star. Back two, and both do.

Shen Li's net worth grows from twenty thousand to twenty million, then to two billion.

Entertainment headlines ask every day: Who exactly is this woman?

Looking at the newspaper in her hands, Shen Li thinks: I've already read the news about your divorce next year.
