The day Zong Yun returned to Wucheng after studying abroad, the city had just endured seven straight days of heavy rain, the worst downpour in decades.
The rain also uncovered three female corpses, their faces slashed beyond recognition.
Wucheng was neither big nor small, but the three bodies made this one of the city's rare murder cases in many years. Panic spread through the city.
The locations where the bodies were found formed a ring around the Zong residence, making everyone there a suspect, including Zong Yun, who had just returned home.
