Amid war and displacement, my hometown fell. I went from being a holy maiden of the Buddhist faith to a courtesan at Xianlufang.
An old fortune-teller told me I would become a widow.
What a joke. I don't even have a husband.
The old man thought for a moment, then said I was destined for Buddhism, and that Buddhism would save me.
I walked away without looking back.
If Buddhism could really save me, I wouldn't have ended up here.
(This is a short story I wrote a long time ago. It never made it into submission and was rejected more than eighty times, so I'm posting it here for safekeeping too, haha.)
