In the traditional script of a hero's tale, Ataranji should have been defeated as the final enemy before the final boss. But even by the ending, she remained protected inside a greenhouse-like dark castle, unable to do anything or go anywhere.
Later, someone asked her: What is your wish?
In a clear, pure voice, she replied with conviction:
I want to defeat the hero. After all, I was born a villain.
The white-robed fighter sat proudly on the roof, looking down at the girl holding a black parasol beneath the sunlight.
He scoffed and declared:
If you're born a villain, then I'll be the one to defeat you!
The girl looked up. Only then did the fighter see her face. For an instant, his breath caught.
Her eyes were calm and still, her skin as pale as fresh snow. Her long black hair framed her so delicately it made one worry the sunlight might melt her. A faint ink-colored beauty mark between her brows lent a touch of the uncanny to her excessively pale, fragile face.
The fighter thought this might be what they called love at first sight.
When he heard that familiar voice again, the ornate black parasol still shielded her from the blazing sun, but beneath it stood a strange, unfamiliar figure, her eyes as deep as an abyss.
He touched his chest. His heart was pounding fiercely, just as it had that day.

[Reader's Guide]
1. Ataranji comes from the Maori word Atarangi, which can mean "light of dawn."
She was born a villain, but has never harmed anyone. Her monster form is based on the long-tailed gossamerwing butterfly. I'll commission a design from a suitable artist later.
2. Kumade Mashiro had me hooked the moment he appeared. I loved him even more after hearing his full battle theme. I immediately felt that there was more to this man's story, and I just hope the official creators don't betray us.
3. Ataranji's human appearance is only a disguise, so this is a genuine human-and-nonhuman pairing.
4. The entire story is told in third person. Come read about our bear and butterfly!
