After a medical accident, Jiang Ji is forced to flee to the Lower District, becoming a dangerous criminal living on the edge of the law, never sure he'll make it through the day.
Getting undercut and having everyone hate him is bad enough. The real problem is that he's caught the eye of an officer.
Fortunately, Fei Chiguan is there to investigate a case, and it happens to fall right in Jiang Ji's area of expertise.
So this cat-and-mouse duo forms a temporary team and charges into the Lower District.
But Jiang Ji and Fei Chiguan don't get along. Whenever they're together, something goes wrong.
The first time they meet, Jiang Ji's only worldly possessions are wiped out.
The second time, Jiang Ji loses one of his safe places.
The third, fourth, fifth, sixth... Jiang Ji gets sick, gets shot, gets injected, gets hit over the head...

What kind of officer looks more like an outlaw than a marginalized criminal?
But Fei Chiguan has money to burn, so Jiang Ji has no choice but to swallow his pride and keep working with him.
As he gets to know Fei Chiguan better, he realizes there's something unusual about the man. His family has more money than anyone could count, and he lets Jiang Ji fleece him without batting an eye.
The good news: He only has to help catch someone.
The bad news: That someone is Jiang Ji!
To save his skin and avoid being dragged back to the Upper District, Jiang Ji immediately chooses to run.
Fei Chiguan has always believed he's good at hiding his emotions, until Jiang Ji suddenly disappears.
He stays in the old house, turning memories over in his mind day and night, until he finally reaches a conclusion: Jiang Ji belongs by his side, even if he has to use lies, shackles, or any other dirty trick to keep him there.
When he finally gets to see Jiang Ji again, the first thing he does is seize an opportunity to tie him up and take him home for answers.
But Jiang Ji... doesn't seem to know him.
Now, the Jiang Ji who used to lie without hesitation and love money more than life timidly tries to bargain with him. "I'll give you all my savings, and I won't report you to the Tribunal. Will you let me go?"
The very rich Fei Chiguan, newly appointed as bureau chief, gives him an amused smile. "What do you think?"
