It's the cheapest and easiest way for modern anime fans to cosplay.

This circle is niche and secretive, but as anime culture has gradually become more mainstream, the community has grown ever larger.

The most infamous scenario in this circle is a lesbian roleplaying a gay man, followed by an explosive tell-all, only to return ten years later still straight.

While everyone else is busy with [kissing, killing, wind, and moonlight],

Gu Yunxi has made her entrance.

Forget the scandals and the massive flame wars, all of you, move aside!

In the language roleplay circle, the right path is to keep your heart closed and perfect your character work!

The more characters you can play, the more partners you'll find!

Moving through a crowd of beauties without letting a single leaf touch you: that's what a good roleplay partner should do these days!

Gu Yunxi swears she'll become a language roleplay master, the kind who doesn't join little online groups, form cliques, start discussion chats, or take sides.

She doesn't believe language roleplayers can fall in love!

After all, lines like "Baby, let's live together when we meet, get two cats and a dog, and cuddle to sleep in a six-foot bed" are just tricks that language roleplayers can toss off at a moment's notice.

So Gu Yunxi starts perfecting her character work like crazy.

Until she meets a roleplay partner who is a perfect match across every circle she's in.

Her partner is socially savvy, quick with a comeback, gentle yet domineering out of character, and even treats her to milk tea.

Gu Yunxi: Hehe... She's so nice.

After a few months of chatting, her partner speaks up.

Her partner: Let's live together someday. Then get two cats. And cuddle to sleep in a six-foot bed.

Gu Yunxi snaps to her senses. She immediately realizes this is another language roleplayer's trick.

Her finger hesitates over the delete button.

Her partner is everything she could want,

and so gentle and kind to her,

but sorry,

she doesn't believe in love across the internet.

So Gu Yunxi presses delete.

The days keep passing,

until the day she graduates from university.

As Gu Yunxi pulls her suitcase out through the campus gates, she accidentally bumps into someone.

She looks up and sees a tall, slender, cool beauty standing before her.

Gu Yunxi apologizes and is about to pull her suitcase away,

when the beautiful woman smiles and rests a hand on her shoulder.

"Yunxi, didn't we agree to live together?"

Gu Yunxi trembles like a startled cat.

Qin Huiyan has been in the language roleplay circle for over ten years,

and has found that, as she gets older, she really can't keep up like she used to.

Back in the day, she could perfect hundreds of characters and come up with sweet talk on the spot.

Now, when her partner sends her a scene,

her mind goes blank for ages, and she can only squeeze in a quick reply: "Hugs."

Even so, she still roleplays.

Until she meets a warm little ray of sunshine.

The little ray of sunshine is just like she used to be,

working hard to perfect her characters,

with over a hundred roles she can play with others.

More importantly, every character the little ray of sunshine has perfected is one of Qin Huiyan's roleplay partners.

Qin Huiyan pushes up her glasses.

It would be a shame not to claim a partner this perfectly chosen by fate.

So Qin Huiyan adds her as a friend and starts chatting in character.

As they chat, Qin Huiyan discovers she likes this girl more and more, until she can't separate her feelings from the roleplay anymore.

So she speaks seriously: Let's live together someday. Then get two cats. And cuddle to sleep in a six-foot bed.

She considers adding something more, but after the words "You can manage my salary card," a red exclamation mark appears.

The little ray of sunshine has deleted her.

Qin Huiyan: ?

Qin Huiyan laughs in disbelief.

She pulls out her phone and makes a call, finding out the little ray of sunshine's real identity in no time.

On the day the little ray of sunshine graduates,

Qin Huiyan waits outside the campus gates.

She doesn't have to wait long.

The sun runs right into her.

Qin Huiyan's eyes curve into a smile: This time, don't even think about running away.

Only after getting together with Qin Huiyan does Gu Yunxi understand:

The characters Qin Huiyan played really were just like her,

cunning, perverse, unreasonable, gloomy, clingy, and pretending not to hear.

She buries her face in the covers with a muffled sigh and turns away, ignoring Qin Huiyan.

Qin Huiyan glances over from a distance, swivels around in her chair, cups Gu Yunxi's ankle in her palm, and gives it a gentle tug.

"What's wrong, baby? Still not enough? Then let's do it one more time."

Gu Yunxi: What? No, I don't want to!

Qin Huiyan: Having a wife is just so great. Huh, you don't get it? It's just great. I mean, I have a wife now. Hey, are you listening?

Glossary:

Language roleplay = linguistic cosplay.

Perfecting a character = learning to speak in the manner of the character you're cosplaying, so your portrayal fits.

Roleplay partner = the person you chat with / your roleplay buddy.

Solo roleplay = writing a scene in character by yourself.

Roleplay together = chatting in character with a like-minded partner.

In character / out of character = speaking as the character / speaking as yourself.
