Zeno first met Feng Ciye at his own wedding.
Feng Ciye was the head of the Feng family, solemn and stern. Usually, he could only be seen on screen.
Before the wedding, the clan patriarch told him, "Mr. Feng knows the Silver Wolf Clan's customs. He'll treat you well."
So Zeno lowered his eyes and married Feng Ciye, careful to be as obedient as possible.
Zeno was a beastkin of the Silver Wolf Clan, whose customs were the opposite of human customs, and quite unusual.
Silver Wolf beastkin showed affection for their partners by frowning and acting cold. They were fierce during sex, but afterward they offered cool, gentle affection. The only way to tell how much they loved someone was by how much their tails wagged.
On their wedding night, Zeno realized that everything Feng Ciye did fit the Silver Wolf Clan's ways.
On the first day of their marriage, Zeno thought, Mr. Feng is such a good person.
A month into the marriage, Zeno thought, Mr. Feng seems to like him a lot.
Six months into the marriage, Zeno thought, Mr. Feng treats him so well. He would gladly do many things for him.
And so Zeno carried on with married life, until their first wedding anniversary.
Rain poured outside. Zeno went to turn down an invitation to a banquet on Feng Ciye's behalf, getting his tail and ears soaked.
Just as he reached the door to the private room where Feng Ciye's friends were gathered, he heard everyone laughing inside. Amid the laughter, he could make out his own name and Feng Ciye's.
Zeno stopped in his tracks.
"That wolf of Feng Ciye's is still being fooled. He still thinks Feng Ciye's frowning at him means he likes him." The others burst into laughter again.
Zeno's breath hitched softly, and his ears drooped at once.
So Mr. Feng wasn't frowning to match his people's customs.
He really did hate him.
Zeno stood there in a daze. He thought it was all because he was too stupid to realize it sooner.

Feng Ciye, head of the Feng family, was a master strategist who controlled the beastkin's survival plan. No one knew he had always hated the beastkin.
To him, this marriage alliance was nothing more than a strategy.
The one who married into his family was a wolf beastkin, whose customs were unusual. Feng Ciye knew all about them.
Zeno was clumsy, useless, and soft-natured, easy to manipulate. A few sweet words and a little coaxing were all it took to make him wag his tail and gaze at him with sparkling eyes.
Feng Ciye was pleased. Beastkin were toys to be played with as he pleased. Give them a little affection and they would be grateful to him. Once he no longer needed them, he could discard them at any time.
Long after they married, Zeno still came eagerly to greet Feng Ciye whenever he opened the door, wagging his tail.
Feng Ciye treated him like a dog, a pet he kept, a plaything for his bed.
Until one day, Feng Ciye came home as usual and opened the door, only to find the little pet who normally rushed to greet him was gone.
His wolf had run away.
