Lin Ling is an orphan whose parents died when she was young. At thirteen, her aunt took her abroad to live, and her turbulent life began.
After skipping two grades in middle school to save on tuition, she finally reached the last year of her master's program at twenty-three.
A graduate student in economics at a renowned American university, she was tearing her hair out over publishing an SCI paper when her professor offered her a special alternative:
Take his place and analyze financial reports at a company in Neon, since he was too busy to go himself.
Um... Professor, did you get something wrong? Sure, I have an East Asian face, but I'm Chinese. I don't speak Japanese!
The professor smiled mysteriously. "That's exactly why I need you."
...?
Though full of questions, Lin Ling couldn't resist the combined temptation of money and her thesis, so she boarded a plane to Neon.
When she landed, the company had even sent bodyguards to pick her up. What a huge company, with two bodyguards and all.
At least, she thought they were bodyguards. Lin Ling wasn't sure as she looked at the silver-haired man in a black trench coat.
A month after starting the job, Lin Ling declared it was her dream job: little work, great pay, and lovely coworkers. It was practically perfect, except that her coworkers often said things she couldn't understand right in front of her.
That was the only downside of working for an international company. Even if her coworkers insulted her to her face, she wouldn't understand a word. To keep that from happening, Lin Ling buckled down and taught herself Japanese.
So six months later, when a few coworkers started talking in Japanese in front of her again, she quietly pricked up her ears.
"The target... needs a female companion to get into the venue... Should we ask Lin Ling for help?"
They needed a female companion? Lin Ling stole a glance at the handsome blond man. A mischievous little deer was leaping in her heart, and she accepted his invitation without a second thought.
Sadly, the little deer lived for only three hours. When her blond coworker pulled out a gun and shot someone, it crashed and died in her heart.
!
Her coworker was a murderer!
As the blond coworker walked toward her step by step, Lin Ling backed away in terror, her hand uncontrollably dialing 110.
"Hello, officer? I need to report a crime..."
With her hands tightly bound and her mouth sealed, Lin Ling stared in terror at the three people surrounding her.
Help me, Mom! Dad!
She really shouldn't have been tempted by a bargain. There really was no such thing as a free lunch. How could a job with great pay and so little work possibly have fallen into her lap?
