As employees of the modern-day Death Management Bureau, their job is to record the details of humans who have committed every kind of evil in their notebooks, investigate their crimes, await the Bureau’s judgment, and reap their wicked souls.
To train its new employee, Sano Yuriko, the Bureau kindly gave her a police identity and dropped her into the world of Detective Conan, where crimes were rampant and countless criminals were everywhere.
System: [This place is crawling with heinous criminals. As long as you don’t hurt the wrong people, you’re sure to become the Bureau’s most feared rookie Reaper!]
Sano Yuriko nodded firmly, got to work, and, after completing her investigation, picked up her pen and wrote down the information of a human.
A few days later, Sano Yuriko responded to a call while on duty. Looking at the human lying dead on the ground, just as she’d expected, she smiled kindly.
System: [This human died early in a murder case. Judgment invalid!]
The kind smile on Sano Yuriko’s face instantly turned vicious. Who had stolen her catch?! Now she’d have to work overtime!
Frustrated, Sano Yuriko wrote down another human’s information, only to be told a few days later that this one had also died early. She hadn’t managed to reap the soul of an evildoer again.
Refusing to believe it, Sano Yuriko wrote down more than ten names in one go, filling an entire page of her notebook. One after another, she received dispatch alerts: every last one of them had died in some kind of bizarre murder or bombing case.
Sano Yuriko: “???”
At last, Sano Yuriko couldn’t take it anymore. In tears, she complained to her supervisor that there was a hidden Reaper named Ariga here, stealing her work.
To appease her, the Bureau arranged for her to take on a new identity in a criminal organization, so she could reap souls there.
On her first day infiltrating the organization, Sano Yuriko happily took out her little notebook and wrote down the names of the three Whiskey members who showed their faces at the meeting, adding notes about their murders and robberies. She waited for the Bureau to sentence them to death.
But ten minutes later, all three were alive and well, full of energy. Instead, Sano Yuriko received a notice that she had nearly harmed an ally on the good side and would have ten years’ worth of performance pay deducted as a warning.
After countless failures in her work as a Reaper, Sano Yuriko was finally driven mad. She wrote down her own name along with those of all her colleagues at the Metropolitan Police Department, declaring that they were all undercover agents in a terrorist organization, that they were guilty, and that they all deserved judgment.
The next day, Sano Yuriko stared in silence at her performance pay deduction of a full thousand years and the salary that had finally arrived.
Sano Yuriko suddenly understood: working hard was no match for going crazy.
