Yu Wen searched for Wenren Shu for three years. When she finally found him, he was playing the erhu and busking at a subway entrance. The first thing he said when he saw her was, “Hey, beautiful, spare me some change?”
Yu Wen got straight to the point. She tossed a bundle of hundred-yuan bills into his chipped bowl and asked for help: “You're Wenren Xu, right? Could you please help me turn off these yin-yang eyes?”
Wenren Shu had injured his celestial eye in the great battle a hundred years ago. He couldn't stand bright light or see ghosts and spirits, and even the world was blurry to him, until Yu Wen stood before him.
He lowered his retro round sunglasses and studied the woman's outline carefully. Though he couldn't make out how many noses or eyes she had, he smiled faintly and said, “It's no trouble, but you have to do me a favor.”
He saw the woman tilt her head, but couldn't make out her questioning expression.
“Lend me your eyes.”
“Also, that character is pronounced Shu.”
