I Refuse to Obey

When the Chu family fell into trouble, everyone looked out for themselves. Only the maid Mu He stepped forward, waiting for the day the Chu family would be exonerated so she could use her good deed to claim a reward.

That day came soon enough.

When the Chu family matriarch asked her what reward she wanted,

Mu He dropped to her knees and answered without hesitation: "This servant wants to be freed from her bonded status, receive a hundred taels of silver, and marry into a respectable family as its proper wife."

-

Only when the Chu family was on the verge of collapse and everyone had turned against it did Chu Conghuai notice that the coarse maid who had stood in front of him was the only one who had ever sincerely cared for him.

So, on the day the Chu family was exonerated, he happily went to find his mother, intending to ask her to make Mu He his concubine.

But then he heard her say she wanted to marry a coarse young servant.

-

The wind howled coldly by the cliff.

Mu He wore a single thin garment, just as she had on the day the Chu family fell into trouble.

"Mu He, I was wrong. Please come back. I'll marry you as my wife." Chu Conghuai was already sobbing uncontrollably, but she was unmoved. Without hesitation, she fell backward into the abyss.
