A thousand years ago, the goddess Si Yan destroyed her own soul to seal away the Kui Ghost.
She had been the principal god of Mengli, a realm in the Celestial Court, overseeing all the painted scrolls of demons and monsters across the Three Realms. Summoning painters throughout the world worshipped her at their altars.
After Si Yan, the principal god of Mengli, fell, summoning painters gradually disappeared from the mortal world. It became harder and harder to find anyone who could exorcise demons and monsters and seal evil spirits inside paintings.
Then, a thousand years later, an ancient bell rang in the capital of the Qingling Kingdom. People everywhere said the goddess would return.
With a blade of grass in her mouth and a small bundle slung over her shoulder, Si Miaoyin slipped into the crowd of summoning painters gathered in Qingling for the event. Unexpectedly, the ancient bell dragged her into a barrier. A flash of white light suddenly appeared in her mind...
When she opened her eyes again, she found herself face-to-face with a pair of cold, detached eyes. The man had white hair falling to his shoulders, long brows, and a high nose. He was so handsome he hardly seemed human. Nine fox tails flickered in and out of sight behind him, yet he opened his mouth and called her "Master."
Si Miaoyin smiled brightly, then took out her paintbrush and lightly touched its tip. "In that case, I've just gotten myself a disciple for free?"
Though she had no idea why she'd wanted to take him as her disciple at first sight.
A thousand years ago, a fox always followed the High God Si Yan. Everyone knew that he was her disciple, Zhaobai, and legend said the two were inseparable.
Zhaobai was the most sincere of young foxes. He loved to wag his tail as he followed her, calling out "Master" again and again. But one day, the Kui Ghost possessed him. The nameless evil spirit took over his body and personally caused the soul of the person he respected most in the world to perish.
To make amends, Zhaobai was willing to spend all his cultivation to send a fragment of her soul into reincarnation, and willingly slept for a thousand years.
He did not know that once he had used up his cultivation, he would lose the memories he had from that time.
Looking at the girl before him, who had no sense of her own insignificance and had come over to touch his ears, Zhaobai's expression turned cold. "Miss, choose your words carefully. Though I've lost my memory, I'm not someone you can bully."
A little scene from much later:
"If you touch my tail again..."
"What will you do?"
"...I'll let you touch it a little longer."
Reading notes:
1. Both leads have lost their memories. The story begins with the heroine reincarnated as an ordinary summoning painter. (Yes, an overpowered veteran returning to the beginner's village, but this isn't a traditional power fantasy. The leads are both strong, though.)
2. The heroine looks different from when she was a goddess, but her appearance will gradually change as her cultivation improves. When she ascends, she will look the same as before. At her core, she's still the same person.
3. The hero's tails have minds of their own and are fiercely protective of him.
A mountain of personal worldbuilding, written with wild abandon.
#My disciple has become a cold, aloof master after a thousand years. What do I do? I'm in a hurry!
#But his tail still feels just as good to pet. (His tail is always wrapping itself around me without permission.)
#Two amnesiacs both think the other looks familiar
