In the dark, damp rainy season, my beloved older brother died in a fire.

My brother and I were very close. We lived in the same orphanage, and later the same family adopted us both.

My brother said he would always stay with me, but he lied. He died.

I watched with my own eyes as my brother's body was sent into the cremator and burned to ashes.

I was heartbroken and cried for an entire day.

That night, my bed dipped under a familiar weight, and I smelled a pungent stench of burning.

Then I heard my brother's voice.

"Little sister, I told you your big brother would always be with you."

As always, my brother soothed me to sleep, singing a familiar lullaby in a gentle, lovely voice.

I nestled in His arms as something gently patted my shoulder.

I saw it. It was my brother's tentacle.

The brother before me had turned soft and squishy. He opened his abdomen and happily invited me to play inside His embrace.

I touched my brother's cheek, and the sunken area swallowed my fingers whole.

My brother's eyes all turned toward me. His brood pouch opened its mouth too, and the white threads it spat out wove themselves into the shape of the thing I loved.

I lay quietly inside His warm brood pouch, watching fleeting scenes of light and shadow. I asked:

"Will you give birth to me, big brother?"

My brother didn't answer. His tentacles danced with joy at my words, then pressed close against my cheek again.

Wet and sticky.
