Mu Wuya was the great villain in a book, a young man with red lips and pearly teeth, so stunningly beautiful it was almost unreal.
Most readers were obsessed with him, but Sang Zhu was one of the few who wasn't. When she read the book, she hated him most of all. He killed without batting an eye, like a poppy blooming among heaps of bones: the more beautiful it was, the more poisonous.
Whenever she saw him, she would frown, sneer, and turn several pages.
After she transmigrated into a book, however, she discovered that many things weren't as the story had described.
In the book, Mu Wuya forced himself on the original heroine and violated her, bringing about his own ruin.
In reality, her senior brother set a transformation pill in front of her and said, "Disguise yourself as Mu Wuya, pretend to be him, and assault Yun Qingshuang."
Sang Zhu was stunned. "Huh? Me?"
In the original story, Mu Wuya was cold and indifferent, treating human life as worthless.
In reality, when someone shoved her into the water in the dead of winter, he was the first to dive in and save her, despite his injuries.
When she was forced to transform into a demon beast and hundreds upon hundreds of cultivators pursued her with drawn swords, he held her in his arms and traded a precious treasure for her life.
Even the coldest woman couldn't help but be moved, changing her initial opinion of him.
Sang Zhu thought, I misjudged him. Before he turned evil, he was such an upright, kind-hearted young man, always happy to help others.
-
Mu Wuya suddenly discovered that he could hear Sang Zhu's thoughts.
[If I die before you, and you help me, maybe I can go home. But later on, you die horribly...]
Mu Wuya narrowed his eyes.
[Mu Wuya isn't like the one in the book. Fate was too cruel to him, and the people around him treated him too harshly. That's what drove him to turn evil.]
Mu Wuya curled his lips, adjusting his smile until it looked gentle and harmless.
[Mu Wuya won't fall for me. Maybe I'm overthinking it.]
But he lowered his eyes and kissed her cheek.
Then, one day, Sang Zhu discovered that he could hear her thoughts.
He was still the ruthless villain from the original story. He'd jumped into the water, traded a treasure for someone's life, and taken a sword for her only because she was useful to him.
Sang Zhu faked her death and disappeared.
-
When he saw Sang Zhu again, she was a doctor at a clinic in the mortal realm, known as the "Little Medicine Immortal," famous far and wide.
After going to great lengths to find her, Mu Wuya changed into coarse clothes and appeared at her door. His complexion was paler than before, he was thinner, and his face had changed. Sang Zhu didn't recognize him.
He came by every few days, sometimes injured, sometimes simply sitting quietly in a chair and watching her. He was a peculiar patient.
He came again that night.
Sang Zhu had grown used to it. "What ails you this time?"
The candle in the clinic crackled and flared, and a shattered glimmer danced in his eyes.
He rasped, "A lovesick heart."
