Crown Prince, top x Demon Emperor, bottom.
Strange phenomena plagued the Nine Provinces, and evil spirits ran rampant among mortals. The Crown Prince killed himself at the altar to appease Heaven's wrath.
The Emperor and Empress were devastated, and the people wept day and night. Special permission was granted for the bells to ring twice in farewell to the Crown Prince.
Yet as the funeral bells rang, the Crown Prince was already traversing mountains and rivers, desperately climbing up to the Demon Palace.
"Calamity and ghosts plague the mortal world, but the people are innocent." The young man, who should have been a noble born to rule, was soaked through with snow and trembling as he spoke, yet stubbornly refused to leave. "I beg the Demon Emperor to help me."
Their first meeting found him in a wretched state, earning only a mocking laugh. "What have the affairs of the mortal world to do with demons?"
Such indifference was only natural. That was how demons were meant to be.
The Crown Prince, pure as jade and steadfast as a pine, exhausted every scheme and walked on eggshells as he struggled to survive in a foreign land. At last, before he could collapse from a high fever, the Demon Emperor carried him back to his dragon's lair.
"Prince of the human race." The haughty, noble black dragon wrapped his tail around the young man and deliberately breathed the stench of blood onto his neck. "Stay with me for three months, and perhaps I will help you restore peace to the mortal world."
Later, the former Crown Prince returned astride a dragon. The ghosts of the Nine Provinces were vanquished, the haunted city was closed, and the evil spirits in the palace were finally cleared away. The people diligently rebuilt their world.
With everything settled, the young man secretly returned the Demon Emperor's inner core and severed the bond between them.
Their three-month agreement had long since expired. It was time to part.
But he had only taken three steps beyond the city wall, his heart heavy with sorrow, when the great demon blocked his way on top of the wall.
"I was only joking with you back then, darling." The Demon Emperor not only stopped him but shamelessly clung to him, trying to steal a kiss. "Your Highness, have you thought about what I asked you before?"
The demon secretly curled the tip of his tail around the Crown Prince's ankle, utterly self-assured. "You're a dragon emperor, and I'm descended from true dragons. Of course the eggs we lay will be dragon eggs."
