Nan Ting was raised by her aunt, the Empress Dowager, and grew up spoiled and willful.
She and the young emperor, Xi Heng, grew up together, but they had been at odds for years and couldn't stand each other.
Xi Heng seemed kind and gentle, but was cruel and violent beneath the surface. With her aunt's favor to protect her, Nan Ting often bullied him.

Just then, assassins appeared out of nowhere and charged straight at Xi Heng.
Xi Heng was struck by an arrow and fell unconscious. The scene descended into chaos, blood flowing everywhere, and Nan Ting and Xi Heng were escorted to safety by the imperial guards.
Not long afterward, Xi Heng woke up, but he had lost his memory.
