At 27, Xu Yang returned to her hometown in southeastern Guizhou. By chance, she met 28-year-old Lin Fang, moved into a stilt house, and became its newest tenant.
Her landlord, Lin Fang, provided her with food and shelter, found people to help her, and took care of her in every way.
Xu Yang suspected he had planned it all along, trying to make her grow used to having him in her life.
When it was time to leave, Xu Yang waited for Lin Fang to ask her to stay, but he never did. He told her she should go live her own life and not stay there for his sake.
Xu Yang burst into tears. “You jerk! Then why were you so good to me?”
Later, Xu Yang found her own path in life, and Lin Fang had a place in it too.
She learned the traditional art of batik, an intangible cultural heritage, while he secured investment to develop the village.
Lin Fang said, “Thank you, my sun, for using your blazing light to create an enclave for me.”
Xu Yang said, “I don’t want to be your sun. I want to be your lover.”
